Sooo….remember how I said I wish I were more crafty? Yeah, well I might have to take that back. As it turns out, being crafty and doing lots of DIY projects is more than a little bit exhausting! We’ve made a lot of progress in The Room, but it’s been very time consuming. Every “little” project somehow managed to turn into at least a several hour event. Maybe it’s just my lack of experience. At any rate, here’s what we’ve done thus far:
First off, we tackled the wall art that I wanted to create using the fabric that inspired the theme of the room. My original plan was to buy three canvases and then just staple the fabric to the back. However, they didn’t have the sizes that we needed, so we had to just buy pieces of wood to build a frame and go from there.
It ended up taking hours, lots of measurements and even more help from Nathan’s parents, but eventually we got them finished and hung on the wall.
That same weekend, Nathan’s parents surprised us with our baby gift, a really comfy chair that we can rock the baby in. It was nice to get that in the room to provide some perspective and help me figure out where I wanted the tree stenciled on the wall.
Next up was actually putting up the stencil and getting the tree painted on. And boy was that a chore! I mean, I’m guessing it was because it took a long time…not because I was actually involved in said painting. Nathan and his dad are nothing if they aren’t concise, so to minimize the amount of paint seepage, they put tiny pieces of tape all throughout the branches before painting.
While they were busy doing that, I kept myself occupied by painting the letters of her name that will go above the crib, using the dark purple and pink paints that we bought for the birds that would later be painted on the wall.
After the tree was finally finished, it was time to paint the birds in….
I have to say I am thrilled with the final result!

I even bought a little bird house ($1 from Michael’s), painted it brown and hung it on the wall to look like it’s hanging in the tree.
Lastly, I used some of my leftover fabric to sew (well my mom did the sewing, I did the cutting) little birds to make a mobile to hang above the crib…or somewhere else in the room. I’m not sure how that’s going to turn out, but I figured that worst case scenario, I have some cute little birds to decorate with.
So that’s pretty much where we are at this point. We still need a crib mattress, changing pad, curtains and a crib skirt (color for both still undecided). Then we’ll just have to hang the letters and add a few finishing touches (a mirror somewhere? I think every baby room needs a mirror) and the room should be all ready to go!
Unfortunately the room is small enough and with the door in the wrong place, so I really can’t get a good picture of the whole thing. So you’ll just have to use your imagination to piece it all together.

wow!! Adrianne! this looks great!!! you will have to show me how you did the stencil–i have never done one before, but this turned out awesome
…i’m pretty sure her name is “saskia”….duh. has a “k” in it
Wish we were going to be in town this weekend, but can’t wait to see your belly and bring presents for the little girl!
looks awesome! now that you have the experience, you can come make everything for my baby room in….a…couple…of…years heh.
Anyway, have a great time this weekend! baby room looks fabulous!
I’m so bummed that you guys won’t be there:( I feel like we haven’t see you in FOREVER. Oh right, we haven’t!
We need to remedy that very soon!
Ahhhhh it looks so wonderful! Amazing, awesome job! I really love it
. I’m glad you were able to get so many creative juices going – props to you for designing it yourself instead of just picking some bedding out. Will I see you Friday? ‘Cause I have a guess on the name :^) and a little somethin’ somethin’ for you.
I’m curious what your guess is though I’m not sure that I’ll be able to confirm or deny it:)
Tip for stenciling….. get a low-tack spray adhesive…. spray stencil… apply to wall… this is less time consuming than tape (been there, done that)… It turned out magnificent though! Really neat…
The chair is PERFECT! It’ll be wide enough for nursing and rocking… I see a lot of people getting those skinny sliders with ottomans, but they just aren’t comfortable for nursing.
The canvases look amazing! Great job!
Tip for the changing mat, unless you like laundry…. don’t get a cover… it’s much easier to clean the vinyl than to have to do laundry daily… Also, when you go to the hospital take EVERYTHING from the room… I mean everything… including the mattress from the rolling crib. I still use it as Kaylee’s changing pad… and before it was her changing pad, it was her bassinet (er… laundry basket because our bassinet did not come with hardware.. wth)… mattress for the first 6 weeks.
Other things we took were the gloves, gauze (aka wipes which can be ordered from newegg.com…still use those.. no chemicals, no drying out.. just wet and go), receiving blankets, mattress pad (for you)…. also, every nurse shift change, request more sanitation stuff for you and just pack it away in your bag…. you’ll need it when you get home…
Hmm.. this turned into a bigger post than I was thinking.. LOL sorry about that.. I’m just really excited for you!
We bought the spray adhesive because the website said they recommend it. Then when we got the stencil in the mail, the instructions said they DON’T recommend it, so the guys didn’t end up using it. I’m sure it would have been tons easier though….
Thanks for the tips on the hospital. I had no idea you could take that stuff, but it makes sense considering how much you’re paying the place!
I am “borrowing” the birdhouse idea… hehe I’m crediting you with it though. While looking around, I saw birds similar to the ones ya’ll made. They attached them to a twig/branch ring with string/ribbon and made a mobile. SO CUTE. Not sure if that’s what ya’ll were doing, but I figured I would send the idea your way.
Have at it!
That’s exactly what we’re planning to do with the mobile! You probably saw the same one that I saw that inspired the idea. I even got the bird pattern off this website. Very cool!
Adrianne, that room looks AMAZING! I am so impressed! I truly doubt my kids will have half as well-decorated rooms as this! I love the birds and tree and the little birdhouse you put up. You are seriously creative, girl!
Thank you! I don’t know if it’s creativity as much as it is scouring the internet for ideas, fabrics, etc. But I am really happy with how it’s turned out so far!
The room looks absolutely amazing!! You are seriously talented. I love the tree and the fabric pics. Your girl is lucky to have such a sweet room. I can’t wait to see it in person!
I can’t wait for you to see it in person too!! Hopefully we’ll see you in September for ACL and baby time:)
Woot woot! I feel honored that I’ve been able to see The Room in person
It really is beautiful, people! I’m thinking about moving into it… I’ll just sleep on the floor under the crib…
I will pay you to do that! That could solve all of my childcare dilemmas! I wouldn’t even make you live under the crib. You could have the room next door:)
If this isn’t crafty I don’t know what is, you put a lot of designers to shame
Wow, I don’t feel at all deserving of that compliment, but thank you so much!
The Room looks great and the tree is beautiful! I’m so disappointed I can’t make it this weekend, but I’ll look forward to snuggling your little girl in person soon. Sending wishes for a wonderful shower! Oh, and does that K go with her middle name? When will be the big name reveal?!?!
We decided to reveal the name when she’s born. And I can’t confirm which part of the name the K comes from because I’m going to have a little name guessing contest here before she’s born:)
The tree looks awesome!!! I can’t even think of a good header to design for my blog so you are miles and miles ahead of me in terms of craftiness! The whole room is so cool and unique!
I’m learning there are lots of different types of craftiness! I wouldn’t be able to come up with a blog header design either….
